How to chose your petrol lawnmower?

A petrol lawnmower is the optimal choice for large lawns. There is no cord, so it’s easy for you to reach further out to any spot on your lawn. And more power means that even dense vegetation won’t stop you. Practically there is no obstacle that could stop a petrol lawn mower doing its task.

There is a variety of types and models available on the market. It can sometimes be confusing. We’ll try to sort thing out for you a little bit, so you can make the best choice possible.

First let me tell you about advantages and drawbacks of petrol lawnmowers as such. As I’ve already mentioned, they are the strongest and the biggest of all lawnmowers.

This gives you the maximum when handling your lawn. On the other hand that means that you’ll have to spend relatively more money. An issue may be also the weight of the machine. Petrol lawnmowers tend to be rather heavy.

If the model you get is not self-propelled, you may have hard time moving it around. You must also remember that a bigger machine is less maneuvrable.

But those drawbacks shouldn’t deter you. Everything comes at some cots after all. If you have an average or above-average lawn and are looking for a reliable equipment, a petrol lawnmower will be probably the best choice for you. Let us take a closer look at different types then.

An important thing when buying your lawnmower is choosing a right blade. In practice for large lawns blades of 20’’ or bigger are appropriate.

One basic thing you must take a decision about is what type of lawnmower you want. There are three types of petrol mowers: rotary, cylinder and hover.

Rotary petrol lawnmowers are the most common type. It’s the type in which there is a single blade which rotates paralelly to the ground surface. These mowers are popular and relatively inexpensive. They are easy to operate and quite fast in getting the job done. If you choose a self-propelled model then mowing even large areas may become pleasure.

A rotary lawnmower however will not secure as fine cut as a cylinder one will do. If it’s the ultimate beauty of your lawn you’re after, and if you can spend enough time taking care of it (or have someone do it), you should consider buying a cylinder lawnmower.

Cylinder petrol lawnmowers use a traditional cutting technique – one still blade is placed just above the lawn surface, over that blade a fast spinning cylinder of blades is situated. This mechanism provides a scissor-like effect. It allows you to get a really close and neat cut. As a result the lawn acquires a typically English appearance (such as required for tennis courts for example). A cylinder mower is typically heavier, less maneuvrable and costs more than a rotary one. But better final effects fully offset those drawbacks.

You must however keep on mind that not all lawns can be handled with a cylinder lawnmower. If the lawn’s surface is uneven, a rotary mower will be the better choice.

Hover petrol lawnmowers are among the lightest lawnmowers. They are ideal for mowing long grass. It’s mainly because they are very manoeuvrable and easy to handle in places which are hard to access for rotary or cylinder mowers. It’s possible thanks to the air cushion effect on which hover mower work. If your lawn is placed on slope or an uneven, bumpy ground, you should consider choosing a hover mower.

Hover lawnmowers are relatively inexpensive and easy in maintenance (especially in cleaning). Note however that you can’t mow a large area with a hover mower, nor can you achieve a striped lawn effect. It doesn’t have a grass collecting box either.

I hope that I have helped you in making the right choice when buying your petrol lawnmower. Good luck!
